Global Advocacy for Rohingya Rights

A global responsibility

The Rohingya crisis is not confined to one country or one region. Decades of persecution, exclusion, displacement and denial of basic rights have created a humanitarian and human rights crisis with global consequences. Rohingya communities now live in Arakan, refugee camps, neighbouring countries and across a growing international diaspora. For this reason, effective advocacy for Rohingya rights must also be international in scope.

The European Rohingya Council (ERC) seeks to ensure that the situation of the Rohingya remains visible on the international agenda and that the voices of Rohingya people are heard in discussions and decisions that affect their future.

Advocating for rights, justice and protection

ERC advocates for the fundamental rights of the Rohingya people, including the right to identity, citizenship, equality, safety, freedom of movement, education, livelihood and a life with dignity. It also supports efforts for justice and accountability for serious violations committed against Rohingya communities.

Advocacy is not only about responding to immediate crises. It is also about addressing the root causes of persecution and creating the political, legal and social conditions in which Rohingya people can live securely and participate fully in decisions concerning their communities and homeland.

Engagement with the international community

ERC works to engage governments, international institutions, human rights organisations, humanitarian actors, civil society, researchers, journalists and other partners who can contribute to the protection and advancement of Rohingya rights. Through dialogue, statements, briefings, campaigns, public events and cooperation with partners, ERC seeks to bring Rohingya perspectives directly into international discussions.

As a Europe-based organisation, ERC is particularly well placed to engage European institutions and policymakers while also contributing to broader international efforts concerning Myanmar, Arakan and the Rohingya crisis.

Keeping Rohingya voices at the centre

ERC believes that Rohingya people must not be treated only as victims or recipients of humanitarian assistance. They are rights-holders and stakeholders in their own future. International policies concerning protection, repatriation, justice, citizenship, humanitarian assistance and the future of Arakan should therefore include meaningful Rohingya participation.

ERC works to strengthen the capacity of Rohingya communities to speak for themselves and to ensure that their experiences, priorities and aspirations are represented accurately in international forums.

Connecting communities across borders

The global Rohingya diaspora has become an important source of knowledge, advocacy, professional expertise and community support. ERC seeks to connect Rohingya communities and individuals across different countries so that experience and expertise can be shared and common concerns can be addressed collectively.

This international cooperation helps strengthen unity while allowing Rohingya people living in different circumstances to contribute to a common effort for rights, justice, education, development and a secure future.

From humanitarian response to a durable future

Humanitarian assistance remains essential for Rohingya refugees and displaced communities, but humanitarian support alone cannot resolve the crisis. A durable future requires the restoration and protection of rights, meaningful accountability, security, equal citizenship, freedom from discrimination and conditions in which Rohingya people can live safely and with dignity.

ERC therefore advocates for solutions that go beyond short-term emergency responses and address the long-term political and human rights dimensions of the Rohingya crisis.

A stronger global Rohingya voice

Through international advocacy, cooperation and engagement, ERC works to build a stronger global Rohingya voice. Its aim is to help ensure that Rohingya people are not forgotten, excluded or spoken for without their participation, and that the international community remains committed to justice, protection and a sustainable future for the Rohingya people.
